PDF support & quick tips
Overview
The Treeless Edition is delivered as an Adobe Acrobat® PDF file. Unlike web pages which look different on different browsers and platforms, PDF files preserve the exact look and layout of the original documents on screen and in print, regardless of what computer platform, browser, or printer you use.
To view the Treeless Edition, Adobe Acrobat Reader® is required. If you don't have Acrobat Reader®, you can download it free from the Adobe web site. Choose the version for your computer's operating system and follow the instructions.
Acrobat Reader® lets you view the pages in the size and positioning you like best. With a little practice, you can scale the pages to your preferences and move from page to page with ease.
Downloading, viewing & printing
Once you have installed Acrobat Reader® on your system, it should automatically integrate with your browser as a plugin. If the Acrobat Reader® does not work with your browser, it may be because you are using an older browser. Try upgrading your browser from one of the sites listed below:
When you click on the link to your Treeless Edition, Acrobat Reader® will launch and open the file within your browser window. If it does not launch automatically, try downloading the PDF to your computer as described below.
Once you have the file open, you can view it using Acrobat Reader's navigation tools, or you can print it by selecting "Print" from the file menu. Below are some tips on using Acrobat Reader's controls.
Handy PDF tips
| Download vs. open |
Downloading the PDF to your desktop rather than opening it in the browser avoids having to wait for the browser to download each PDF page. To download a PDF file to your desktop, right-click (Mac users: click and hold) on the link to the PDF and do one of the following in the menu that appears:
In Internet Explorer®, select "Save Target As..."
In Netscape®, select "Save Link As..."
You will be asked where you want to save the file. You can save the
file anywhere, but your desktop might be most convenient if you want
to open it right away. After the file downloads, you can now double-click
it and Acrobat Reader will open it without using the browser.

| Printing |
If you choose to print a copy of your
Treeless Edition, printing in black and white is faster and uses less
ink. Color printers provide a setting for black-and-white printing,
found in different locations depending on the printer's make and model.
To find it, click "Print," click the "Properties" button, and look
for the black and white setting (sometimes called "grayscale") in
the menus available there.
Users sometimes experience printing problems which result from the printer running out of memory. If you are having difficulty printing or the file won't print correctly, turn your printer off for at least 15 seconds, and then restart it to remove anything that may be cached in the printer's RAM (Random Access Memory). Print the PDF file again. If the file prints, the problem was full printer memory.

| Changing size |
You can view your Treeless Edition at many sizes,
from an extreme closeup (providing large type for the vision-impaired)
to a pair of pages side by side. To change sizes quickly, you have
several options:
| On a PC, use the key combinations Ctrl
or Ctrl+. |
|
| On a Mac use Command(Apple)
or Command(Apple)+. |
|
| Click the plus or minus in the Zoom toolbar or select a percentage. |
 |
| Click on one of the three paper icons in the toolbar to select
(left-to-right) Actual Size, Fit in Window, or Fit
Width. |
|
|
To get a closeup of a particular spot on a page, use the zoom
tool to click on the area you want to see closer. You can also draw
a box around an area with the zoom tool and that area will grow
to fill the window. |
 |
|
You can choose from three layouts, (left to right) Single Page, Continuous,
or Continuous-Facing. Selecting Continuous-Facing displays two pages
side by side, as in a printed newspaper. |
|
|
| Getting around |
|
To move around in a page, Click the Hand tool in the top
toolbar (Acrobat Reader® 5.0) or the left toolbar (Acrobat Reader
4.0), and then use the hand tool with the left mouse button to drag
the page around on the screen as you would move a real piece of
paper. Or use the scrollbars at the right and bottom edges of the
window, or the page up/page down keys on your keyboard. |
 |
|
To move from page to page, use the left and right arrow keys on
your keyboard. Or use the arrows in Acrobat's top or bottom
toolbars, or use the scrollbar on the right side of the window.
When dragged, the scrollbar will display page numbers. |
|
|
To use a thumbnail index: click the Show/Hide Navigation icon
in the top toolbar to display a left column containing thumbnails
of the pages. Click any thumbnail to move to that page. Clicking a
specific part of a thumbnail will display that area of the corresponding
page (unless the whole page is already visible). |
 |
|
Most controls described above can also be found in Acrobat Reader's pull-down menus. Note that these menus will not appear when Reader is running as a browser plugin.
PDF access for the visually impaired
Access.Adobe.Com is
a tool that allows visually impaired users to read the Adobe PDF files.
The tool converts PDF documents into simple HTML or ASCII text which can
then be read by a number of screen reading programs that analyze the HTML
and present it as audible speech.
